2012 Dave Ward Memorial Lecture Award
Presented to Derek Kingston

2012 Ward Award Recipient Derek Kingston

The 2012 Dave Ward Memorial Lecture Award was presented to Dr. Derek Kingston on Oct. 10, 2012 at the ACGSC Meeting 110 in Auburn, Maine.

Dr. Kingston received the award for excellent contributions in autonomous cooperative control of UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles) including development of an innovative algorithm that allows teams of UAVs to reach optimal formation for successful accomplishment of mission objectives.

Dr. Kingston is a Research Engineer with the Aerospace Systems Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), where he is responsible for executing and overseeing basic research pertaining to autonomous UAV control, particularly focusing on cooperative control of teams of small UAVs. He received the BS, MS and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Brigham Young University in 2002, 2004 and 2007, respectively. Dr. Kingston was one of the primary developers of the Kestrel Autopilot which is used in a number of industry and university research activities. His dissertation presented decentralized algorithms for perimeter surveillance and target tracking using multiple UAVs. At AFRL, he applied the algorithms developed during his dissertation to meet near-term Air Force needs for improvised explosive device detection, and was awarded the 2009 Harold Brown award, the highest Air Force award presented to a scientist or engineer who applies research to a problem in the field. Dr. Kingston is the program manager for an innovative vertical takeoff and landing UAV development program, is an industrial board member for the NSF Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, is a member of the Michigan/AFRL Collaborative Center for Control Science, and is an associate editor for the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems.
