AbstractThe NASA Langley Learn-To-Fly project is aimed at developing the technologies required for self-learning and adapting aerospace vehicles. This is a key enabler of truly autonomous vehicles that will be capable of rapidly and autonomously estimating models of their behaviors, and using that information for flight control, flight safety, and reliability improvements with a resulting benefit of short development and testing time cycles. An overview of the aspects of the Learn-To-Fly project will be presented, and recent results in the first leg of the project, aerodynamic modeling, will be shown including recent flight tests demonstrating in-flight global nonlinear aerodynamic modeling where complete, 6 degree-of-freedom aerodynamic math models were developed and validated with additional flight data all in a single flight with results complete before landing. These recent flight tests were conducted in a cooperative research project between NASA and the National Test Pilot School, and utilized piloted maneuvers across a wide range of flight conditions to develop the nonlinear aerodynamic models.
