A Benchmark Flexible-Aircraft Simulation
for Active-Control Research - FLEXSIM

Abstract: A non-linear, fast-time simulation of a large flexible aircraft has been developed to encourage and support research in the dynamics and control of flexible flight vehicles. The vehicle simulated is similar to the Rockwell B-1, The simulation – FLEXSIM - was developed in Simulink, and includes a non-linear aerodynamic model associated with the rigid-body degrees of freedom, a linear aeroelastic force model, a non-linear engine model with table look up, a statistical model of atmospheric turbulence, selectable feedback stability augmentations systems, and a structural-mode control system developed to attenuate the acceleration environment at the cockpit. The presentation includes a description of the development of FLIXSIM, along with sample results. FLEXSIM is available as freeware - it is copyrighted but with permission granted for its research use. It is available at www.mhhe.com/schmidt, click on “MATLAM files.”
