ACGSC Meeting 111, Reno Nevada
Presented by
Michael G. Gilbert, PhD
NESC Principal Engineer/MLAS Chief Engineer

The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) was formed on November 1, 2003 in response to the Space Shuttle Columbia accident to provide project and program independent engineering and safety analyses. The NESC is completing its 10th year of operation in 2013, and has conducted over 500 independent technical activities at the request of NASA Management, Program and Project Engineers, and Engineers. While the initial work concentrated on the return-to-flight of the Space Shuttle Program, in more recent times the NESC has focused on addressing development program risk reduction activities, including full-scale efforts such as Composite Crew Module and the Max Launch Abort System flight test. The NESC continues to accept approximately 50+ new activities a year.
Many of these activities relate to the GNC discipline, including the four highlighted in this talk. These include support for F-18 flight testing of an Augmenting Adaptive Control function for the Space Launch System program and three spacecraft systems. For the LADEE spacecraft the NESC is supporting a spacecraft alignment working group to define requirements and methods for ensuring the rocket motor is properly aligned with respect to the spacecraft center-of-gravity, an assessment of the ICESAT laser beam steering hardware, and an investigation of the source of transient bias offsets in the Hubble Space Telescope gyroscopes.
The NESC sponsors short video lectures on specific topics within various disciplines, including GNC. Over the past few months, two lectures were created on "Adaptive Control" and "Spacecraft Attitude Determination." Future topics include "Kalman Filtering and Estimation", "Entry, Descent, and Landing", and several others, on an approximately bi-monthly schedule. To obtain more information on the series, and to discuss opportunities for participation, please contact Neil Dennehy at cornelius.j.dennehy@nasa.gov , 240-687-9077
