The Joint Strike Fighter (F-35) Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft variant achieved a significant and historic milestone in the System Design and Development program by demonstrating shipboard operations aboard a Wasp Class LHD carrier. During this first detachment for the F-35B, shipboard deck handling, short takeoff (STO) launches, and vertical landing (VL) recoveries were successfully demonstrated. The Integrated Flight Propulsion Control (IFPC) performed flawlessly as 72 launches and recoveries were performed on two F-35B aircraft. Three STO modes (Stick, Button, and Auto) were utilized by the pilot for launch and flyaway. Two hover modes (Baseline and Translational Rate Control) were flown from approach to a stabilized hover then to touchdown to landing spots #7 and #9 on the LHD flight deck. The test pilots were highly complementary of the F-35B flight characteristics, low workload, and overall compatibility with the ship environment. The shipboard handling qualities ratings compared favorably with the shorebased testing conducted at Patuxent River NAS. A few shipboard related observations resulted in control law improvements which will be evaluated in the next LHD detachment. The presentation will include an overview of the F-35 STOVL flight control modes, testing summary, handling qualities results, shipboard unique learning, and plans for the next LHD detachment.
