AbstractAbstract
Field Tests of an Airport Surface Congestion Control Strategy

Hamsa Balakrishnan
MIT

Increased congestion on the surface has resulted in increased taxi times at major airports, as well as the associated fuel consumption and emissions. In this talk, I will discuss how more efficient airport operations can be enabled through congestion management techniques, while meeting the practical requirements of the real system. In particular, I will describe Pushback Rate Control, a strategy to reduce taxi times and fuel burn by controlling the rate at which flights push back from their gates, which MIT researchers designed and field-tested at Boston Logan International Airport in 2010-11, with promising results.

Bio: Hamsa Balakrishnan is an Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received a B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University. Prior to joining MIT, she was a researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the NASA Ames Research Center. Her research interests address various aspects of air transportation systems, including algorithms for air traffic scheduling and routing, integrating weather forecasts into air traffic management and minimizing aviation-related emissions; air traffic surveillance algorithms; and resource allocation mechanisms. She is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award (2008), and the 2012 AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award.
