AbstractDepartment Flight Dynamics and Simulation, DLR Institute of Flight Systems
- Update, Latest and Coming Research Activities

During the last years a trend of a gentle growth of the German Aerospace Center DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) could be observed which also applies for the DLR site at Braunschweig and for the Institute of Flight Systems. The runway extension at the Research Airport in Braunschweig is completed and will allow unrestricted flight test operation of DLR’s new test aircraft A320-ATRA. The new building of the Simulation Center is erected and installations are ongoing.

In 2011 new research activities have been kicked-off. A big collaborative long term research project on “Fundamentals of High Lift for Future Airliners” aiming at efficient STOL operation with low noise emission. The SuLaDI (Supercooled Large Droplets Icing) project deals with the improvement of the situation of aircraft in icy conditions. The Department of Flight Dynamics and Simulation is leading this project and will technically contribute to modeling and simulation of contaminated aircraft, analyses of its behavior, reliable detection and quantification of icing using parameter identification. Another research activity is focusing on Boundary Avoidance Tracking, where new flight test technique to trigger high pilot gains is investigated.

The Department of Flight Dynamics and Simulation will kick-off fife new research activities in 2012:
- Development of onboard monitoring, warning, and control systems for wake vortex encounter
- Investigation of the effect of level of automation on the pilots’ situational awareness in specific situations and assessment of corresponding pilot behavior
- Flight test validated aircraft model of a modern aircraft with flexible lightweight structures, modeling of structural loads
- Development of novel online onboard procedure for identification of aerodynamic parameters for the immediate generation of validated model of aircraft dynamics
- Investigation of the effect of simulator fidelity and simulator training effectiveness
