AbstractAutomated Aerial Refueling Abstract

The Automated Aerial Refueling Phase II (AARII) end goal is to accurately identify and thoroughly document measurable customer requirements and the resources – funding, time, technologies, and people – needed to fully execute them. AAR II will deliver both system and segment level design guidelines, and will accomplish a variety of systems engineering technical reviews, including System Requirement Reviews, System Functional Reviews, and Technology Readiness Assessments. The AAR project is intended to recommend requirements for future development of the capability for Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) to refuel from manned tankers, with the KC 135R as the target tanker. The AAR Concept of Operations (CONOPS) will mirror procedures used by piloted aircraft to the greatest extent possible. The emphasis will be on refueling of bomber-type aircraft with unique aspects being addressed to include multi receiver / multi tanker cell operations and changes to arrival / departure procedures. AAR II will greatly increase the operational utility of future RPA, shortening the response time, decreasing the deployed footprint, and extending the range of the RPA.
