AbstractThe Global Observer

SAE/IEEE Aerospace Control and Guidance Systems Committee
Meeting 108
Gettysburg, PA

Aerovironment's Global Observer is a liquid-hydrogen powered extreme endurance UAV that has been developed as a high altitude observation and telecommunications platform.

It is the latest generation of a long lineage of HALE UAVs that Aerovironment has been developing since 1985, including the pioneering solar powered flying wings Pathfinder (now in the Smithsonian) and Helios.

Global Observer combines a very light weight structure with a large liquid hydrogen storage capacity and a highly efficient hybrid electric propulsion system to yield flight durations of up to 7 days and altitudes up to 65kft while carrying a 380 lb payload.

Many interesting stability and control challenges are posed by this combination of extremely low wing loading, large wingspan and lightweight flexible structure.

This presentation will discuss some of the fundamental characteristics of this type of platform and illustrate how they influenced the development of the guidance, navigation and control system for Global Observer.
