Abstract

The Thirty Meter Telescope Project is a collaboration of Caltech, University of California (UC) and the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA). The main mirror is composed of 492 hexagon segments. An overview is presented of the control issues for the main mirror, including requirements, pointing and tracking, shape control, phasing of the segments, and rejection of wind disturbance and vibration. A more detailed explanation will be presented of the shape control problem, including the selection of actuators and sensors, the inner servo loop, the outer global control loop, stability, and control structure interaction. The telescope will be located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. First light for TMT with all segments aligned and phased, and with light through the Adaptive Optics Systems and onto the instruments is scheduled for 2019.
