Abstract
Impact Technologies, LLC is a high-tech engineering consulting and health management system development firm that is dedicated to supplying advanced machinery diagnostic and prognostic solutions and software tools in the aircraft, land-based equipment, power, and defense industries. Impact is currently engaged in several R&D programs covering the areas of engine and flight control and engine health management. In this presentation, two of these ongoing efforts are discussed: Prognostics-Enhanced Automated Contingency Management (ACM+P) and Distributed Engine Control (DEC). The innovative feature of the ACM+P architecture is the utilization of real-time prognostic information in the design of the vehicle control and mission planning algorithms. Given accurate on-line prognostic information in terms of estimates of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) or Risk Assessment of a failing component / system, the proactive ACM+P system manages the accumulation of further damage through control actions at least until major mission objectives are achieved although the system is in an impaired state. This approach constitutes a major paradigm shift in the way fault-tolerant systems are designed and operated. In the DEC program, Impact is developing a novel verification environment for eventual rapid certification of distributed control elements such as new high-temperature components and control laws. The technologies developed in this program include a control law verification framework is proposed to assess stability, safety, and performance of the assembled distributed engine control system, in addition to a verification testbed for new hardware components.
