AbstractThe purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the flight test philosophy for F-35B STOVL Envelope Expansion. Beginning with conventional mode testing and conventional mode testing with STOVL Doors Open, the F-35B flight test program has moved onto STOVL mode envelope expansion. The initial phase of STOVL mode flight testing, Initial Transitions, is focused on safely and efficiently building down to hover and vertical landing. This presentation provides an overview of the Initial Transitions test plan, focusing on some of the unique aspects of STOVL aircraft, including the flight envelope, how the flight envelope is initially expanded, and an overview of the qualitative pilot comments to date. The Initial Transitions test plan is the starting point for a much larger and more extensive STOVL envelope expansion test plan, which will be used in establishing an initial STOVL mode operating envelope for service use.
