AbstractUnmanned air vehicles, and access-to-space vehicles are the primary focus areas at the Air Vehicles Directorate. Specifically, the directorate is developing technologies in support of unmanned strike vehicles, persistent ISR vehicles, long-range strike vehicles, directed energy weapon vehicles, advanced air mobility platforms, and reusable space launch vehicles. Great deal of investment is being made in developing algorithms for teams of UAVs to cooperate with each other, share information and make decisions to successfully complete military missions. Task coupling, uncertainty and partial information seem to be some of the fundamental challenges to this new and difficult problem of cooperative control systems design. In the “access-to-space “ area, we have developed advanced guidance and control laws for certain control effector failures during approach and landing for the X-40A space-maneuvering vehicle. We have also successfully tested our X-40A control laws through in-flight simulation on the TIFS aircraft. Some of the latest research plans include cooperative combat ISR missions, electronic attack with cooperating UAVs and cooperative control of UAVs for urban warfare.
