AbstractFlight safety can be seriously affected by aircraft icing because the aerodynamic characteristics may change tremendously under icing conditions. Especially the effects under SLD (Supercooled Large Droplets - size greater than 50 microns) icing conditions are not well understood and new icing certifi-cation regulations were the starting point for a research initiative between DLR and EMBRAER. The main focuses of these investigations are the effects of SLD icing on the aircraft aerodynamics and developing certification strategies for future aircraft. EMBRAER provided a Phenom 300 prototype as test aircraft, while the DLR Institute of Flight Systems provided its expertise on system identification. Flight testing of aircraft with altered aerodynamic configuration is a safety critical and time consuming task. For the evaluation of the aircraft characteristics under SLD icing conditions, flight tests with artifi-cial ice shapes were performed. These flight tests were supported by online algorithms for the estima-tion of aerodynamic parameters. Results were available in near real-time onboard the aircraft or al-ready during the debriefing on ground. Pre-flight data from wind tunnel experiments could be con-firmed already during the flight using these online analysis tools, thus the flight tests could be per-formed in shorter time and more safe. This presentation will introduce the developed analysis tools and will present results from the flight test campaign.

Short Introduction speaker Per Ohme:
• April 2006: Degree in aerospace engineering at Technical University Berlin, Germany
• Since May 2006: Research engineer at the DLR Institute of Flight Systems in Braunschweig, De-partment ‘Flight Dynamics and Simulation’ → mainly working in the fields of flight data analysis, modeling, system identification
• Since August 2010: Team Leader of the ‘Modeling and Simulation’ group, Manager of several Sys-ID projects and an extensive aircraft icing research project
• Since August 2017: Head of the department ‘Flight Dynamics and Simulation’ of the Institute of Flight Systems
