AbstractAn ongoing flight test project is to support development of the Navy’s Advanced Aerial Refueling Store (AARS). The AARS is being developed as a means to refuel unmanned air vehicles using the Navy’s probe and drogue refueling method. Earlier this year a standard refueling pod was flight tested for compatibility under the Calspan G3 airborne testbed aircraft. The current phase of this project includes installation of the AARS on the centerline pylon of the G3 testbed and installation of all control and monitoring equipment inside the airplane as well as in one of the Calspan Learjets which will be simulating an unmanned air vehicle. During several test flights next week the AARS will be extended, retracted, and controlled from inside the aircraft, from the simulated receiver aircraft, and from a ground telemetry van.

An upcoming Test Management Project (TMP) flown in the VISTA F-16 in support of the USAF Test Pilot School was briefly described. A project planned for VISTA is the follow-on of a previous Learjet project that evaluated an L1 Adaptive controller. In the VISTA the system will be tested with control surface failures making use of VISTA’s capability to deflect or fail only a single control surface such as a right or left flaperon or a horizontal tail surface. This project is for Class 2016A and will be flown later this year.

Calspan’s modification of a UH-60L into a variable stability aircraft which was reported at the previous ACGSC meeting was completed in April of this year. Curriculum development for Test Pilot School use of the airplane took place over the summer. Calspan recently received a contract to modify a second Blackhawk helicopter into a variable stability training aircraft. This will be the 5th variable stability helicopter developed for NTPS since the 1980’s. This project will begin in January and will be completed by April of 2017.
