AbstractThe Solarimpulse project was created by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg to demonstrate the feasibility of flying around the world on solar energy in 2003.

The round the world flight campaign started in March 2015 in Abu Dhabi and was paused due to technical difficulties in July 2015 after completing a record 5 day flight from Nagoya to Hawaii. The RTW flight campaign restarted in April 2016 with the 3 day flight from Hawaii to Moffet Field, continued across the US followed by a 3 day flight crossing the Atlantic from New York to Sevilla. Finally it was successfully completed crossing the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian peninsula via Cairo back to Abu Dhabi.

The presentation starts with an overview of the project creators, highlights environmental, human pilot and engineering design challenges. Next significant problems and issues faced during the multi day legs of the RTW2015 campaign are described. Next the RTW2016 results are presented and finally details related to the monitoring and alert system software are
