AbstractFlight Test Evaluation of the Fused Reality System
Fused Reality is an exciting new technology that combines real world video with an interactive computer generated environment to create a highly immersive training environment for complex tasks such as landing, formation flying and aerial refueling. Fused Reality can also be used to develop realistic and repeatable handling qualities tasks. Fused Reality was developed by Systems Technology, Inc. (STI) under funding by NASA, NAVAIR, and the US ARMY. In a collaboration between NASA, STI and NTPS, Fused Reality was successfully flown on the school’s Gippsland GA-8 Airvan research aircraft culminating in four evaluation flights by NASA Test Pilots in January 2015. Handling qualities ratings of the test aircraft were collected using tasks generated by Fused Reality. These tasks included offset landing (at altitude), formation flight, and aerial refueling drogue tracking. This paper will describe the Fused Reality system, the flight test program, and lessons learned including those concerning collaboration between flight test organizations.
