AbstractTo better determine the expansion rate of the universe cosmologists are interested in studying the cosmic microwave background. To do so a ground-based telescope is used to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. To properly calibrate the ground-based telescope a high-altitude balloon will point a calibrating microwave source at the telescope. This talk with discuss the design, building, testing, and flight of a six-pound high-altitude balloon system capable of pointing a microwave source at altitude of 15 km to 25 km.
Specifically, dynamic modeling of the balloon-gondola system, estimator design, and control systems design will be discussed. A detailed discussion of a direction cosine matrix estimator used to estimate the attitude of the gondola will be given.
